This is a meta-modern and somewhat reductive take on Édouard Manet seminal piece from 160 years ago. The current interpretation is an attempt to remove any potential controversies while hovering between restraint and execution. What is left behind the scenes is up to you.

The Rainbow's End
Acrylic on canvas | 9 x 12 | 2024
$3,500
Award of Merit, Lyme Art Association "Bon Appetit" Exhibition, 2024
This is a contemporary take on the Memento Mori tradition that playfully capitalizes on the current foodie photo culture to bring about a potent reminder that death is universal and inescapable. The gloriously succulent demise of the rainbow trout is amplified by a rainbow of colors coming from artfully selected garnishes and reflections from dishes and silverware. The scenery is as transient as a life of this aquatic dweller.
● Gallery-wrapped heavy-duty stretched canvas 9 inches (23 cm) high, 12 inches (30 cm) wide, and 1.5" (4 cm) deep.
● The canvas sides are painted and the gallery wrapping is esthetically suitable to be displayed unframed.
● Ready to hang, hardware included.
● Multiple acrylic gloss and satin varnish coats for UV protection and easy cleaning.

My Bike was Lost in Amsterdam
Acrylic on canvas | 16 x 20 | 2025
$ 6,000
The painting offers a glimpse into a momentary reflection on the time spent cycling around Amsterdam during a summer hot spell. The bright gleam of the bicycle wheel rim is juxtaposed against the shadows it casts on the brick sidewalk. Tenacious weeds growing through pavement joints add some visual interest to the otherwise "stilleven" (from Dutch "Still Life") composition. Fortuitously, the painting was inspired by a sidewalk near Rijksmuseum known for its wonderful collection of Dutch still lives with "memento mori" motifs. But here instead of a skull, an hourglass or decaying food we have a stopped cycle and weeds fighting for existence in the summer heat and harsh city environment.
● Gallery-wrapped heavy-duty stretched canvas 16 inches (40,6 cm) high, 20 inches (50.8 cm) wide, and 1.5" (4 cm) deep.
● Framed in a back floater frame with silver-tone accent. Ready to hang, hardware included.
● Multiple acrylic gloss and satin varnish coats for UV protection, reduced glare, and easy cleaning.

Tucked Away Memories
Acrylic on canvas | 20 x 16 | 2025
$ 6,000
The painting takes a different stance on the vanitas theme and uses the sense of impermanence and fragility to express the traditional "memento mori" motif, but without skulls, candles or hour glasses. Here we see a few mementos grouped to form a striking composition: delicate silks and a blue glass vase with a fresh cutting positioned atop paper journals. All of them represented something fragile and impermanent, attached to past events and faded memories.

Tulipmania
Acrylic on canvas | 18 x 24 | 2017
$ 9,000
Tulips are the restless bunch. Even when cut, they sway, stir, stretch. Their movement is juxtaposed to the still solidity of the brass container and the sensible heftiness of the wooden table. The undulating nature of tulips is reminiscent of the transient nature of values that humans tend to attach to a particular object or symbol - those valuse tend to grow even when there is no more solid foundation left as was evidenced by the Dutch 17th century tulip bulb frenzy.
• The painting is framed in an ornate gilded frame. Finished framed size 30.25 inches (77 cm) wide and 24.25 inches (61.5 cm) high.
• Stretched canvas 18 inches (46 cm) high, 24 inches (61 cm) wide and 5/8 inches (1.8 cm) deep.
• Multiple acrylic gloss and satin varnish coats for UV protection, reduced glare, and easy cleaning.
