Two soaring hawks are suspended in the sky forming chiaroscuro silhouettes against the dense clouds hiding the sun. The light and shadow interplay adds lightness and lift to the hawks' dynamic movement. The sunlight filtering through feathers reflects the sky color and turns the brownish plumage into sublime turquoise. The deeper meaning of the painting explores complex interrelationships between the main archetypes of the ancient Egyptian mythology: Ra, the Sun god, Seth, the god of storms, chaos and violence, and Horus, the sky god.
