“Mephisto” speaks to deeply personal struggles pertaining to shifting values and norms. In Faust, Mephistopheles is not the one who tempts and corrupts, but the one who summons the corrupted. As a catalyst for chaos, Mephistopheles upends established routines and tests moral boundaries. He is the spirit of negation that drives Faust to seek more out of life, proving that sometimes chaos is necessary for growth. The foreboding color palette and the intense menacing gaze are the conduits of the symbolism. The painting was executed using the Zorn palette: Cadmium Red, Black, Yellow Ochre and Titanium White. This choice was essential for heightening intensity and concentration of emotions.
